Song of the Week #32
When Ocean of Slumber dropped their title track from their upcoming album Winter as a teaser for what to expect, this girl here (ME!) was extremely impressed. I had a flashback of the days where all I would listen to were Netherland divas, Anneke van Giersbergen (ex-The Gathering) and Floor Jansen (Nightwish). Which is saying a lot because there shouldn’t be one damn prog fan who is not familiar with those beauties and their talent.
My Song of the Week is actually going to be another track of Winter called “Suffer the Last Bridge”. After listening to their full album, this track stood out the most to me. Musically, lyrically and vocally – I’ve never heard anything so honest, cold and powerful before now. The sympathetic guitar riffs and ambience paired with patient drum grooves serve as a perfect playground for the vocalist’s cries of giving up.
“I’ve built a bridge over water.
Don’t care to cross it now
‘Cause I’m over building bridges.”
There are heavier sections throughout the track as well where the double kick drum technique comes out to play but it surprisingly fits well in this particular track and it doesn’t seem out of place. And most importantly, it doesn’t drown out the vocals. I swear, everything is just so damn balanced. Check it out for yourself!
